Set students up for success

Every student brings a unique combination of strengths, needs, skills, interests, and ways of accessing instruction. Before planning what and how to teach, educators need a clear understanding of the individual learners in their classroom. Use assessment results, observational profiles, instructional suggestions, accessibility considerations, and other available student information to identify areas of strength and need and determine the supports that can help each student access instruction.

With a clearer picture of student needs, educators can make more intentional decisions about how to use Unique Learning System, News2you, and Symbolstix together. This foundation helps ensure that core instruction, supplemental learning opportunities, communication supports, and accessibility features are selected with individual students in mind, creating a starting point for more purposeful planning and a classroom experience designed around the learners it serves.

Identifying and aligning student needs

1 Review existing data

At the start of the year, gather what the team already knows:

Evaluation reports, IEPs, and behavior documents
  • Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP), annual goals, specially designed instruction, accommodations, and any FBA or BIP
Progress reports and work samples
  • Which goals were met, how much the student grew, and how they show learning best
Medical background, therapy services, and team input
  • Sensory needs, assistive technology, related services, effective reinforcers, routines, and interests
2 Collect new data and realign

Use Unique Learning System's assessment tools to confirm or update that picture.

Data collection and assessment options
  • The Unique Learning System Assessment Guide explains how each tool documents present levels and supports instructional decisions
  • As new data comes in, adjust student account settings, so every student's experience aligns with their current needs
3 Apply settings across solutions

Reviewing existing data and collecting new data determines which settings to choose. Existing records show which accommodations and supports a student already relies on, such as IEP accommodations, assistive technology, and communication methods. New data from observational profiles and benchmark assessments shows the right level of support now.

Account settings put that information to work
  • Accessibility settings control how the student sees, hears, and responds to content
  • Solution settings control the level of content each solution delivers

Data sources

Observational Profiles are rating scales the student's multidisciplinary IEP team completes to capture present levels, strengths, and support needs, and to recommend a differentiated level.

Complete a new profile each year.

Observational profile for a sample Grade 6 student, marked completed. A gauge shows an overall score of 1.5 and a differentiated level of Level 1, Participation. Level by area: Reading 2; Writing, Math, Content Learning, and Technology 1 each. Suggested strategies are provided for every skill area.

Observational profiles and differentiated levels

Review profile results

Creating a new profile each year automatically archives the previous one, which keeps a history of student growth. Each completed profile produces a score and a suggested differentiated level. Profile results list each section's level, the descriptors selected, and suggested strategies. Use the listed strategies to choose scaffolds, group students, and draft IEP present levels and goals.

Once a level is set, all assigned Unique Learning System and News2you activities load at that differentiated level.

Benchmark assessments

Review interpretation results

Each benchmark score falls into one of four interpretation ranges. The goal is to move up and down the sequence until the student scores within the Instructional range. That skill becomes the right target for daily instruction and IEP goals.

Connecting the solutions

When the settings in each solution reflect the same data, supports stay consistent from one activity to the next. The example below shows how one student's profile results lead to settings and resources across Unique Learning System, News2you, and Symbolstix.

Example: A student whose observational profile recommends Level 1 and who communicates with symbols

Accessibility and solution settings

Set once per student in My Account → Students → Student Card → Settings

Three login options matched to student independence: username and password for independent students; simplified password with a class code, with no username needed; and a QR badge for students who find typing hard.

Reading accessibility settings: text-to-speech with a chosen voice, reading speed, and highlight color; and symbol-supported text, with aligned symbols shown under the text when available.

View accessibility settings: pan lock keeps assignment pages from moving; zoom level sets the default for every assignment; and symbols can be shown or switched to text only.

Six interactivity settings: highlight and audio to support answer selection, target cue, completion prompt, a visual prompt for Level 1 unit checkpoints, narrowed answer choices, and hide ink tool.

Keyboard shortcuts to review with students: arrow keys zoom and turn pages, the spacebar speaks the page aloud, and Tab shows or hides the navbar.

Unique Learning System solution settings: grade band matched to assigned grade rather than ability; differentiated Levels 1 through 3; reading level priority for text levels aa through L; and lesson and course overrides by subject.

News2you solution settings: newspaper levels Simplified, Regular, Higher, and Advanced; Breaking News levels Discovering, Building, Exploring, Connecting, and Expanding; activity Levels 1 through 3; and in-article gear options for text level, text size, activity level, and symbols.

Symbolstix supports: symbol-supported text from more than 100,000 symbols; communication boards built from Unique Learning System unit or News2you issue collections and assigned to students; personalization with skin tones, 11 languages, and your own images; and sharing boards with the student's team.
