uPar helps you and your school learn which way of reading helps you understand text best. It compares reading with text-to-speech and reading on your own.
uPar basics
- uPar is not about getting a good or bad score
- Your results help show whether hearing text read aloud supports your understanding
- The first full protocol is designed to identify both your Accommodation Level and Independent Level

You are in control
Take the time you need. The protocol is intended to take about 20 minutes, but it can take longer. You can take a break or save and return later when needed.

Sign in and set up
Use the student site to begin your protocol, then choose the settings that make the text-to-speech experience comfortable for you.
Get started
1 Go to startpar.com and sign in using the method provided by your school
2 Choose your text-to-speech voice, speed, and highlight color
3 Test the sound before you begin
4 Select your current grade level

Read with text-to-speech
uPar begins by checking how well you understand text when it is read aloud.
Start your protocol
- Choose from the reading passages offered to you
- Listen to and follow along with the text
- Answer the comprehension questions after each passage
- uPar may adjust the reading level of the next passage based on your responses

Do your own best work
Your responses help uPar understand what supports your reading. Ask for help with directions or technology, but complete the reading and questions yourself.

Read independently
After the text-to-speech portion, uPar gives you text to read silently so it can compare the two reading experiences.
Continue your protocol
- Read the passage silently at your own pace
- Answer the comprehension questions that follow
- uPar may provide another passage depending on your responses
- The comparison helps show whether text-to-speech changes your comprehension or reading efficiency

Finish and learn from your results
When you finish, your educator can review your results with you and explain what they show about your reading.

- Ask what your results show about reading with and without text-to-speech
- Learn which reading tools are available to you at school
- Practice using recommended supports so you know when and how they help
- You may complete another full protocol or a shorter Quick Check later if your school wants updated information
