Understand the administrator role

uPar is a universal reading screener that provides data on whether text-to-speech supports reading comprehension and access to grade-level text.

Administrators can

  • Manage educators and permission levels
  • Manage students and licensing access
  • View reports and download summary data
  • Manage stories and access available configuration information
  • Support consistent implementation across schools or teams

Quick Tip

Know the access points

Administrators and educators use universalpar.com. Students complete protocols at startpar.com.

section 2 of 5

Activate uPar and prepare your team

Complete the initial access and technical readiness steps with your Everway representative and IT team before broad rollout.

Activation checklist

1 Provide all applicable email domains and the initial license administrator's name and email to your Everway sales partner

2 Have the administrator on file sign in with the district email address to activate the uPar license

3 Work with IT to allow the required uPar URLs and services on the school network

4 When possible, push staff and student bookmarks for easier access

Quick Tip

Preview the student experience

Educators and administrators can use startpar.com to preview a simulated student protocol. Simulated protocols do not report data.

section 3 of 5

Set up staff and permissions

Make sure staff members have the correct uPar role before they begin managing students or reviewing data.

Core roles

Administrator

  • Manages educators, students, permissions, reports, stories, and available configuration values

Educator

  • Manages connected students, administers protocols, and views reports for those students

Analyst

  • Views reports and downloads summary data without managing licenses or administering protocols

Student

  • Completes uPar protocols and does not have setup or reporting access

Add educators

  • If staff and students share an email domain, add educators through Manage Educators so staff do not receive a student-only view
  • Add educators individually by email or import multiple educators with a CSV
  • Communicate access internally; educators do not receive an automatic notification of new access

Change permissions

  1. Open Manage Educators
  2. Locate the staff member and select the gear icon
  3. Turn on Admin Access and save

section 4 of 5

Set up student access

Student setup depends on your licensing structure. Confirm the method used by your organization before rollout.

Unlimited Licenses

Group Licenses

Students using the approved email domain can access startpar.com without being uploaded by an administrator

Add students individually by email or username; Use CSV upload when adding multiple students

Educators still need to connect with students to view their data

Google Organizational Units may be used when supported by district setup; Educators may use Google Classroom rostering where available

Launch, support, and monitor

Set a clear rollout plan, equip educators to administer protocols successfully, and use reporting to monitor implementation and accommodation needs.

Before protocols

  • Share educator resources and establish a district or school completion timeline
  • Ensure classrooms have enough compatible devices and headphones
  • Plan approximately 20–30 minutes for the initial student protocol
  • Confirm educators know how to prepare students and access support

After protocols

Do Over / Full Protocol

  • Use summary and individual reports to review participation and accommodation recommendations
  • Encourage teams to use uPar data alongside other student information when making accommodation decisions
  • Support staff in teaching students how and when to use recommended read-aloud accommodations
  • Use Full Protocols and Quick Checks when progress monitoring is appropriate
