Elementary

Select the share button at the upper right hand corner of Mathspace and select “Make a copy for each person and expect a response” to generate a student link.

Objectives

Practice using the following Equatio Mathspace tools: Insert Math, Equatio Editor, Handwriting Recognition, Speech Input, Freehand Drawing, Shapes Library, Smart Shapes, Edit Math, Replace Math, and Molecular Viewer (STEM Tools)

Illustrate money and place value using virtual manipulatives + infinite cloner

Overview

Linked above is a series of ten tasks for elementary level students to complete that will require them to use a variety of tools to familiarize themselves with Equatio Mathspace. This activity is designed to be flexible and adaptable. Assign to individual students or small groups. Each page is designed to allow for individual use. Teachers may also edit individual pages, and add or remove pages to customize this lesson for their students.

Tips + Tricks
  • Remind students frequently that they must click the Insert Math button when they use the Equation Editor, Handwriting and Speech Input tools (pages 1-3).
  • If the infinite cloner does not work on pages 5-6, double check that you have shared the student link using the instructions above. The infinite cloner only works on student Mathspaces.
  • Pages 7 - 9 may be too advanced for your students, especially in the early grades. You can remove those pages or use them for early finisher or enrichment activities.
  • Students can use the paint bucket buttons at the top of the screen to change the fill and line colors.
  • Look at the bottom for the pop-up on the right to change settings for smart shapes (page 7).
  • Students can type the word “water” next to “Name” in the molecular viewer. It does not need to be “H2O.”
  • Remind students to always click on the submit (paper airplane) button on the upper right to turn in their work to you.

Middle School

This activity is designed to be flexible and adaptable. Assign to individual students or small groups. Each question is designed to allow for individual use. Teachers may also edit individual questions and add or remove questions to customize this lesson for their students.

Tips + Tricks
  • Students will click on the blue Equatio button to the right of the answer blank to use Equatio within Google Forms. They will not use the Equatio Chrome extension button.
  • Remind students that they must click the Insert Math button when they use Equatio in order to submit their answer in Google Forms.
  • For the Handwriting and Speech questions, students may opt to use the Equation Editor instead. Remind students that although they can use the Equation Editor as much as they want in everyday activities, you want them to practice using these specific tools.
  • Show students that they can also use Insert Math in Equatio Mobile.
  • Set aside some time to go over questions and comments to gather student feedback about Equatio. This will also provide you with valuable information about what specific tools you may need to review later.
  • This form is a quiz, but no point values are assigned to the questions and most questions are not self grading. If you decide to give a grade for this activity, consider using the responses spreadsheet for easier review of answers that require manual grading.

High School

Demonstrate the functionality of Equatio for Google for their peers

This activity is designed to be flexible and adaptable. Assign to individual students or small groups. Each slide/task card is designed to allow for individual use. Teachers may also edit individual slides and add or remove slides to customize this lesson for their students.

Tips + Tricks
  • Students will click on the blue Equatio Chrome extension button to the right of the omnibox/address bar in the Chrome browser to use Equatio within Google Slides.
  • Remind students that they must click the Insert Math button when they use Equatio in order to insert their work in Google Slides.
  • Remove the prediction activity if you prefer for students to memorize formulas.
  • For the Handwriting and Speech questions, students may opt to use the Equation Editor instead. Remind students that although they can use the Equation Editor as much as they want in everyday activities, you want them to practice using these specific tools.
  • Periodic Table answers: 1. 9.012, 2. 1803, 3. Wolfram
  • Scientific Calculator answers: 1. 259, 2. 3.1416, 3. 7, 4. 153/25
  • Set aside some time to allow students to do the show and tell activity in the last two slides. You may also want to have students submit these slides and create a student resource deck for future reference.
